Earlier this year, we sat down with agency AIN, Lehlie, who started working with us early last year. She is from the Philippines where she graduated with her Bachelor of Nursing, working in various areas of hospitals.
But for the past few years, Lehlie has had to undergo her nursing studies here in Australia while working as an AIN. When Lehlie first came to Australia, she worked in aged care and is now working with us in Sydney in the public hospitals.
We are so excited to hear that Lehlie has now completed her Bachelor of Nursing and graduated with distinction. Congratulations Lehlie and thank you for your dedication!
From Registered Nurse in the Philippines to AIN in Australia – what was it like studying again?
It was frustrating to be starting my studies again, but I enjoyed the process and extending my knowledge with the way nursing is taught here in Australia.
How did you balance your studies with work?
It was definitely challenging at times to manage my studies with work, but I think the secret to having that balance is time management. Also, be organised and plan a month or so ahead of schedule. So, know the requirements of your assessment and note down the due dates. When it comes to your finances, know when bills are coming out and have a plan.
I think another important part is to be dedicated to your studies and your job. Remind yourself of your passion to help and care for others.
Do you have any memorable moments since working with NNA?
Yes, I had a mental health patient who was at risk and had a new-born baby. I was able to gain the patient’s trust, connect with them and encourage them with their treatment and support them to be positive. I think you need to understand your patient deeply in some instances and helping them see their purpose is very important as well as the medical treatment.
What skills do you think you have strengthened since working with NNA that will help you in your future roles?
Yes. I am a shy person, and it is sometimes difficult for me to talk to people and connect with them in everyday life. But through NNA I’ve learned to communicate with the team, with managers, and with other nurses. They have really helped me build my confidence. So now in any situation, for example, if I encounter difficult family members, I know how to be professional but firm.
Through NNA I have also learned how to be more patient and compassionate, because everyone has their own struggles and when in the hospital people can be more anxious.
Would you recommend agency nursing to fellow nursing students? If so, what advice would you give?
Of course! My advice would be to work as an agency AIN, especially through NNA as it opens you to more experience and opportunities. You’ll gain more knowledge in how to apply your clinical and practical skills learnt in university.
Working with NNA has boosted my confidence in working with different people and healthcare professions.
